Pieces by Local Artists Acquired by Parnell Library
The work of local artists is displayed throughout Parnell Memorial Library.
This beautiful stained glass panel featuring Cahaba lilies had its debut at the 2007 Montevallo Arts Fest, when artist Nicki Masterson brought it to the gallery exhibit of works by Fest Artists. With the enthusiastic support of members of the Montevallo Arts Council, it was purchased from the artist soon after the Arts Fest with contributions made to the newly created Montevallo Arts Council Art Fund. Part of the permanent art collection of Parnell Memorial Library, it is on display in the rotunda of the new Parnell Memorial Library.
The Parnell Memorial Library now includes a painting by Laurie Binion of the Kroell House, a much-admired Victorian residence that stood where the Alabama Power building now stands.
The Parnell Room in the Library, dedicated to the memory of Dr. and Mrs. L. C. Parnell, Sr., and made possible by the generosity of Mrs. L. C. Parnell, Jr. (Mary Sue), features the collection of Civil War books and memorabilia that was bequeathed to the library by Dr. L. C. Parnell, Jr.
Above the fireplace is a landscape painting of the Alabama River at sunset at Gee's Bend, Alabama, by Mobile native Travis Abbott. This work of art was donated by Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Parnell, Jr., (Foots and Allene) and is a worthy addition to the handsome board room.
Baby Grand Piano Given to Parnell Library
The new George Steck baby grand piano is the centerpiece of auditions for The Best Christmas Pageant Ever to be performed December 8 and 9, 2007, in Parnell Memorial Library Theater. Stephen Elkins, UM music and theatre major, plays as young people audition for the performance. The piano was a gift to Parnell Library by Andrew and Barbara Stein of Panama City, Florida, and is in the Library Theater.
